Actors should get paid to audition

I have always felt that the audition and self-tape process is incredibly unfair for actors. In order to get work, actors have to perform hundreds of hours of unpaid labor every year at the behest of producers. Even after the recent SAG-AFTRA strike and re-negotiated contract, the power imbalance is so profoundly asymmetrical.

To solve this issue, I think that producers should have to pay actors a small fee per page to audition or to do a self-tape. This would make producers think twice before having hoards of actors prepare 20 page auditions at the last minute.

If you are an actor, what do you think of something like this? How much of your time is spent preparing self-tapes and going out on auditions?
